How To: Update Your Playroom on a Budget - Omaha Habitat ReStore

As we leave behind the hot and humid summer and move towards the cooler weather that fall brings, many find inspiration to change up their homes as well.

Since many kids are back in school, it seems like the perfect time to update their play area. With a few items from our Omaha Habitat ReStore and repurposed items from your own home, you can easily turn an outdated space into a bright room for kids to play and explore.

TIP: Budget should always be the first thing to consider when beginning a new project. The ReStore can be added to a list of perfect places to shop for affordable home items. Whether you are tackling a total remodel with flooring, light fixtures and appliances, or if you are just looking for a few new items to refresh your space; you can find plenty of options to fit your budget at ReStore.

With a budget in mind, you don’t need to have a large budget to make big changes in your home.

Here is a great example of a transformed playroom completed by simply updating paint color, repurposing current items in your home and adding some second-hand furnishings from our ReStore.

Before: The original space seemed pretty dark and dingy, despite having a wall and a half of windows.

This space was currently being used as a sunroom and a separate ‘home’ for two dogs, but with a growing baby, this family wanted to update the room into more appropriate, useable space. They had a list of projects to tackle but started with painting the whole room (including ceilings) with coats of Simply White by Benjamin Moore.

In doing so, they were able to tie the different wood finishes together, which made the room appear larger. Your eyes no longer focus on the awkward transitions and varying wood finishes, but rather on the long and narrow layout of the room.

Then, by pulling in a large area rug (that was no longer being used in another room of the house) they were able to cover enough of the old flooring to give the appearance of something new without spending a dime.

Adding in new storage pieces and thrifted items like an old rocking chair and a couple of vintage schoolhouse chairs, purchased from a second-hand store, completed the ‘new’ room.

From furniture and paint to final touches and decor, the Omaha Habitat ReStore always has items you can use to update any room in your home.

Here are some great ‘playroom’ items you can often find in our ReStores if you want to take on your own playroom/kid’s room update!
